Essential repair and conservation works are now underway at 13–14 Westgate Street, an iconic part of central Bath’s historic streetscape. Situated in one of the city’s most popular and stylish areas, surrounded by high street brands, independent shops, and vibrant cafés, this project is about more than restoration: it’s about preserving a living piece of Bath’s heritage at the heart of the community.

Originally built as large Georgian townhouses, these four-storey, Grade II listed buildings now serve a dual purpose - with retail spaces at street level and residential flats above. Over time, natural weathering has affected key external features, prompting Bath & North East Somerset Council (BANES) to commission a £60,000 programme of repairs over six weeks to safeguard the buildings’ historic character and prevent further deterioration.

The scope of the works includes:

• Specialist stonemasonry repairs, including careful cleaning and re-pointing of the original Bath stone
• Roof repairs to the traditional Mansard structures
• Restoration of original timber sash windows to improve performance and preserve period detail
• Repainting the façades using historically appropriate colour schemes

These repairs are being delivered in close collaboration with BANES’s Conservation Team and in accordance with Historic England guidelines, ensuring full compliance with the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act.

By acting now, we aim to avoid more invasive repairs in the future and retain the architectural identity that makes Westgate Street a destination for residents and visitors alike. We’re also mindful that this is a lived-in, working street. All works are being carefully planned to minimise disruption to both residents and businesses, allowing everyday life to continue while essential conservation takes place.
