We’re delighted to have completed an 8-week, fast-track refurbishment of 20 Milsom Street, a Grade II listed property in the centre of Bath’s renowned shopping district. The transformed building will soon open its doors as the newest bricks-and-mortar location for Heal’s Furniture – its eighth nationwide – bringing a modern and contemporary retail experience to one of Bath’s most historic streets.

Delivered on behalf of Heal’s, the project focused on sensitively upgrading the 6,000 sq. ft space while preserving the character that defines the landmark building. Spanning three floors – basement, ground and first – the works were completed by a coordinated team of 15 specialist trades.

Key elements of the refurbishment included comprehensive electrical and fire-protection upgrades, the replacement of multiple fire-door sets and targeted fire-compartmentation works to improve overall building safety. Fourteen original timber windows were also carefully restored and repainted, complete with maintaining the architectural integrity of the façade.

Internal shop fit out of the ground floor area

Enhancing the staff facilities, we installed a new kitchen and new flooring within the staff room. Across the retail space, we erected shop fittings, off-loaded furniture stock, fitted out the shop, and installed the new cash desk in line with Heal’s operational requirements.

Further works included repairs that reinstated natural light through the existing skylight, refreshed shop-front decoration with updated signwriting, and interior redecoration throughout following Heal’s signature colour scheme. A new basement storage area complete with racking was also formed to support the retailer’s logistical needs.

Brendan Turner, NKS’ Contracts Manager leading the project, comments: “We are incredibly proud of the care and craftsmanship that went into this project, breathing new life into a property that had remained empty for many months. 20 Milsom Street is an important part of Bath’s architectural heritage, and we’re pleased to have played our part in its restoration and to have delivered the project in time for the start of Bath’s Christmas Market.”

Heal’s is expected to open to the public 21 November 2025, offering its signature range of contemporary furniture, lighting and home accessories.
