Nestled in the rolling countryside of Bath, the Duchy of Cornwall estate at Newton St Loe is a place rich in history and charm, having remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years. We are thrilled to share the successful completion of an extensive refurbishment that has breathed new life into some of its most cherished properties. Secured through a competitive tender, this project was not just about restoration - it was about preserving the soul of these historic buildings while ensuring they remain fit for purpose in the modern age.

For centuries, the Duchy of Cornwall estate has been a beacon of heritage conservation, carefully balancing tradition with sustainability. The latest refurbishment project covered eight properties, blending craftsmanship with meticulous attention to detail. Each building has its own story, from the quaint thatched cottages to the grand Old Rectory, the Duchy’s Head Office and a historic cornerstone of the estate’s administration.

Each property underwent a tailored restoration, addressing essential repairs while ensuring that its original charm remained intact. The work included external decorations to all woodwork, painstaking repairs to timber-framed windows, roofing restoration using traditional slate and clay tiles, and careful lead valley repairs to prevent water ingress. Dormer leadwork was redressed, and minor guttering repairs were carried out to ensure these buildings remain well-protected against the elements.

One of the biggest challenges was working within occupied properties, requiring coordination and careful phasing to minimise disruption. The project was delivered by a highly skilled team of decorators, roofers, and a carpenter/joiner, all of whom brought their expertise and passion to every detail of the restoration.

The four-month, £20,000 project ensures that the Duchy's properties remain weatherproof and restored to their former glory, and beyond the physical repairs, this work plays a vital role in maintaining the legacy of Newton St Loe, preserving the estate’s historic charm for many years to come.
