We’re pleased to have achieved CHAS accreditation as a Principal Contractor for another year. Yet it’s easy to look at an accreditation like CHAS, or any other certification, and see it as another certificate to add to a company profile. In reality, the process is a useful opportunity to stop and ask a more important question: “Are we actually doing what we say we do when it comes to health and safety?”
As a Principal Contractor, that question matters. Our responsibility doesn’t stop at providing PPE, completing site inductions or having a set of policies sitting in a folder. It extends to how we plan work, how we manage subcontractors, how we respond when something changes and, ultimately, whether everyone goes home safely at the end of the day.
The CHAS assessment looks at the systems and processes behind that responsibility. It considers how health and safety is managed, how risks are assessed and controlled, how competence is demonstrated and how the business provides assurance that its arrangements are actually being implemented. But accreditation alone doesn't make a site safe.
The real test happens on site
It happens when a programme is under pressure and someone has to decide whether to rush an activity or change the sequence. It happens when an unexpected condition is discovered and the original method of work no longer makes sense. It happens when a subcontractor wants to take a shortcut, or when a site team has to stop and ask whether something can be done more safely.
Those decisions are where a company’s health and safety culture really shows itself.
For us, achieving CHAS as a Principal Contractor is less about having another logo to display and more about demonstrating that we have the structure, competence and processes to manage our responsibilities properly.
It also gives our clients confidence that health and safety isn't something we consider once a project starts. It’s built into how we plan, procure, coordinate and deliver our work. And perhaps that's the more important point.
Good health and safety isn't about creating more paperwork
It's about creating better decisions, which is why we're applying those standards in the way our projects are managed on site, from pre-start planning and inductions through to daily briefings, inspections, risk assessments and the way our teams respond to changing conditions. Our site managers and supervisors are responsible for making sure the arrangements established before work starts continue to be followed and challenged where circumstances change.
CHAS is an important milestone for us, but what matters most is making sure the standards behind it are reflected in the way our teams work every day, on every project.
