Engineering a Safer Environment for Cleve Court Residents

Engineering a Safer Environment for Cleve Court Residents

PROJECT DETAILS

Duration

7-Weeks

Location

Bath, Twerton

Value

£165,000

Expertise

Principal Contractor

Sector

Care Home

Bath and North East Somerset Council (BANES) owns and manages around 1,200 facilities across the county, including care homes and other public buildings. Among these, Cleve Court Care Home in Twerton provides high-quality residential care in a safe and welcoming environment.

Client Requirements

BANES required urgent intervention to address areas of land movement and unstable retaining walls within the care home’s grounds in Twerton. The primary objective was to reinforce the safety and long-term stability of the site for residents, staff, and visitors, ensuring compliance with engineering standards while minimising disruption to the home’s operations.

How we Helped

As principal contractor, we delivered a seven-week programme of ground stability works, combining careful planning, geotechnical expertise, and precision construction. Key interventions included the replacement of a failed 30-metre-long timber crib wall, installation of 94 Vulcan Dry Ground Anchors with tensioning and pull-testing, and application of high-tensile DELTAX rockfall protection netting.

Gabion Baskets and Vulcan Dry-Ground Anchors

Collapsed wall sections were rebuilt using gabion baskets. We collaborated closely with Geo-Consulting for geotechnical guidance and followed structural designs from MESH Engineering to ensure each element met stringent safety and engineering requirements.

Project Outcome
The works successfully stabilised the slopes and retaining walls, addressing immediate structural concerns and providing long-term confidence in the safety and stability of the site for the care home community. Every stage was carefully monitored to ensure the safety of residents and staff while achieving permanent structural stability. The project has set a benchmark for future interventions, with similar works planned at Combe Lea Care Home to extend this long-term resilience across BANES’ network of care homes.
