East Trees Health Centre is a GP practice located in Eastville, Bristol, providing essential healthcare services, including minor surgeries, to the local community. The health centre serves a broad catchment area and is a critical asset for local residents.
However, a serious incident of vandalism resulted in extensive damage to the glass screens on the mezzanine floor, forcing the centre to close temporarily due to safety concerns caused by shattered glass on the floor below.
In response to this urgent situation, we were appointed as the main contractor to manage the replacement of the damaged glass screens. The project aimed to restore the affected areas in a timely and compliant manner, ensuring the safe reopening of the centre. The scope also included enhancing security at the reception area to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Client Requirements
The vandalism incident led to the destruction of the original glass screens, which served as barriers along the curved edge of the mezzanine floor on the second level, overlooking the ground floor. These screens were essential for maintaining the safety of the health centre’s staff, patients, and visitors.

How we Helped
The project involved two primary phases: the replacement of the mezzanine glass screens and the installation of security screens at the reception area. Our expertise in overseeing cost and programme management led to the appointment of Aspire Glass and Somerset Joinery to assist with delivering the work. A detailed site survey was conducted to create templates for the new glass screens. Due to the unique curved design of the mezzanine, a bespoke solution was necessary to ensure a precise fit. In line with updated building regulations and a focus on enhanced safety, the original toughened glass was replaced with laminated glass offering greater durability and safety as it does not shatter into dangerous fragments upon impact. Once fabricated, the glass panels were carefully installed to match the bright metalwork along the curved edge of the mezzanine, restoring both functionality and aesthetic appeal to the space.
In addition to the mezzanine glass replacement, the second phase of the project focused on improving security at the reception area. Custom-built security screens were installed at the reception desks to protect staff from potential threats while maintaining an open and welcoming environment for patients. These screens were designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing layout, enhancing security without compromising the functionality or appearance of the reception area. Together, these two phases addressed both the immediate safety concerns caused by the vandalism and the long-term security needs of the health centre.
East Trees Health Centre was able to reopen promptly, allowing it to continue delivering essential healthcare services to the community. Our efforts not only restored the centre to full functionality but also provided long-term safety improvements, protecting the building, its staff, and its visitors.
