Heal's is one of the UK’s best-known premium furniture and home interiors brands, recognised for combining contemporary design with long-standing craftsmanship.

As part of their continued national expansion, the company selected Bath for its eighth physical store, bringing its modern retail offer to one of the country’s most historic and prestigious shopping destinations. The chosen location, 20 Milsom Street, is a prominent Grade II listed property in the heart of the city centre.

Client Requirements

Heal’s required a local contractor capable of delivering a high-quality retail fit-out to accommodate the date of their store opening, while also respecting the heritage significance of the building. The property had stood vacant for several months and needed substantial upgrading before it could operate as a flagship retail environment. The programme was especially time-sensitive, with Heal’s targeting completion ahead of Bath’s busy Christmas trading period and the start of the city’s renowned Christmas Market. Alongside aesthetics, the building also needed modern fire safety, electrical and staff welfare improvements to meet current operational standards.

How we Helped

We delivered an 8-week fast-track refurbishment of the 6,000 sq. ft premises, coordinating a team of 15 specialist trades to complete works across the basement, ground and first floors.

The project involved comprehensive electrical upgrades and enhanced fire-protection measures, including replacement fire-door sets and targeted compartmentation to improve life safety throughout the building. Fourteen original timber windows were also carefully restored and repainted, preserving the architectural character of the listed façade.

Fit-out of the ground floor show room

Internally, we created improved staff welfare facilities, installing a new kitchen and upgraded flooring within a newly constructed staff room. Across the retail areas, a full shop fit-out completed, including new fixtures and fittings, fitting a new cash desk, and off-loading and positioning furniture stock into the store.

First floor fit-out with skylight refurbishment

Additional works included reinstating natural light through repairs to the existing skylight, refreshing the shopfront with new decoration and signwriting, full internal redecoration in Heal’s signature colour palette, and forming a new racked basement storage area to support stock handling and day-to-day logistics.

Outcome
The completed refurbishment has transformed a long-vacant heritage building into a high-quality retail destination, welcoming customers to Heal’s newest UK store. The project has given Heal’s a strong presence in Bath’s premium retail market while ensuring the character of the historic property has been retained and enhanced.

The store now represents more than an additional location - it strengthens brand reach, creates an immersive showroom environment for customers, and demonstrates how modern retail requirements can be successfully integrated within a listed building; a balance that local customers will appreciate.
