UWE Frenchay is the main campus of the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol. As one of the largest university campuses in the southwest, it serves as the central hub for UWE’s academic, administrative, and social activities.
A well-designed reception area plays a key role in shaping the student experience, making it essential for the space to be both functional and inviting. By modernising the reception desk, UWE aimed to streamline interactions, reduce wait times, and create a more organised front-of-house environment where students and visitors could easily access the support they need.
Client Requirements
As the heart of campus activity, UWE’s Student Services is a crucial touchpoint for students and visitors. To create a more welcoming and efficient environment, UWE sought to upgrade its reception desk - enhancing first impressions, improving accessibility, and meeting the growing demand for support.

How we Helped
With the reception area surveyed for practical space, telecommunications, and power, we set a plan for a design aligned with the area’s décor and to stand the test of time. The design aimed to future-proof the teams evolving needs, ensuring it could accommodate changing patterns of student and visitor interactions.
A temporary desk maintained the essential operations while the new desk was being designed and installed. This ensured minimal disruption to the teams day-to-day activities, allowing staff to continue providing support seamlessly to students and visitors during the transition period.
The new ‘Block in Reception Desk’ is a bespoke design, measuring almost three meters wide, with oak-veneered boards for the main desk sections and a Formica laminate finished in Marine Blue for the front cover.
Installation began in two stages. The first stage involved moving the telecommunications and power points to match the new desk's design and position. This was necessary to ensure the desk’s power outlets and data ports would be functional and easily accessible once it was fully assembled.
The second stage was the on-site assembly of the desk’s sectional components. This process involved carefully constructing the desk from its individual parts, including the oak-veneered boards and the Marine Blue Formica laminate panels. By dividing the installation into these stages, we were able to minimise disruption to the reception area’s daily operations.
The result is a highly functional workspace for both staff and visitors. Its spacious layout ensures that two staff members can work comfortably, while the sleek design not only keeps the space tidy and professional but also acts as a centrepiece drawing attention and complementing the reception area’s design.
