The University of the West of England (UWE) is one of the UK’s leading modern universities, recognised for its focus on innovation, student experience, and industry collaboration. Its Glenside Campus in Bristol is home to the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences and houses a variety of teaching, library, and study facilities.

Blocks B, C, and D on Glenside Campus are historic Victorian buildings originally constructed in 1861 as part of the Bristol Lunatic Asylum. Later forming Glenside Hospital, these landmark structures were acquired by UWE in 1996 and now serve as a library, and essential academic spaces for students and staff.

Client Requirements

UWE aimed to preserve the heritage and character of the three blocks while ensuring the buildings remain functional, safe, and visually appealing. The project focused on restoring and decorating the original timber sash windows in full compliance with the listed building covenants, enhancing their overall appearance and longevity while respecting the legal and historical requirements associated with these Victorian buildings.

How we Helped

Working closely with UWE’s estates team during the summer shutdown period, a select number of our in-house team of 25 heritage trained, and multi-skilled decorators carried out specialist restoration and decoration of 150 timber sash windows across all three blocks. By carefully preserving the original features of these Victorian buildings, we enhanced both their durability and aesthetic appeal.

Heritage trained painter exercising the finishing touches

Glenside Reception completed with scaffold moved

The project included meticulous preparation, using Dulux Weather shield on all window frames to provide long-lasting protection and a high-quality finish. Any damaged timber was repaired using Repair Care resin system, ensuring the windows retained their original character while meeting modern performance standards.
